Blue & White Charter

Polaris Supreme arrived at Fisherman’s Landing August 8 after a four-day trip with chartermaster Robin Gledhill and skipper tom Rothery.
“We had a great day of open water fishing on the first day,” he told Bill Roecker on the dock. “We got bluefin and yellowfin tuna in sloppy conditions. Alan McVey of Huntington Beach won the jackpot for a 58-pound yellowfin, when we spent a day at Guadalupe Island.”
Paul Canne of Simi Valley showed off a typical yellowtail from the island, a fish of something over 30 pounds. He said he got it during a night bite, with a sardine on a dropper loop.
Hookers Charter
Spirit of Adventure docked at H&M Landing August 8 following a three-day trip offshore with 24 anglers and skipper Brian Evans.
Shane Weaver of Avondale won first place for a 29-pound dorado. He caught it with a sardine on a size 2 Gamakatsu hook on 30-pound Izorline fluorocarbon and 30-pound Izorline. He said he used a Torium 30 reel and a Penn six-foot rod.
Alan McVey of Huntington Beach won second place for a 28.2-pound yellowfin tuna. Louie Diaz of Torrance won third place for a 27-pound yellowfin.
Dandy Guadalupe Tuna
A four-day trip with 30 anglers returned to H&M Landing August 8. Andy Cates skippered the trip. His anglers caught a lot of fish offshore the first day and got some high-quality yellowfin at Guadalupe Island. They also took some nice yellowtail at San Martin.
Lisa Kenny of Pt. Loma took her first tuna, a 53-pounder, at the island with advice and assistance from skipper Cates. She said the fight left her stoked but tired.
Charles Seifert of Newbury Park won first place for a 63.7-pounder. He bagged that yellowfin with a sardine on a 3/0 Mustad 91450 hook on 50-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader and 65-pound Power Pro Spectra on an Avet HX 5-2 reel and a Calstar 700 H rod.
Don Cox of Costa Mesa won second place for a 63.1-pound tuna. Terry Ekstrom of Algonquin, IL won third place for a 59.3-pound Guadalupe Island yellowfin tuna.
Giant Bluefin Report
“Bill,
“The BFT bite is off the hook in Cape Cod this summer. Here is the report on a great catch by angler Ron Butler on standup gear made yesterday:
“The rod was one of our custom 50-130 standup rods with 130 jerry brown to a 150yd topshot of 130 Diamond (Thanks Basil). 12′ of 90 Seaguar, 11/0 saltwater hook. The first run was 400yds we ran up on her and got half the mono back and she bolted another 300. First run was at strike 28 lbs second was halfway between strike and full so probably 36lbs. After the second run we stopped her and got her to circle and that was 30 or so minutes. I couldn’t wait and the angler was getting tired so I took a throw at 20 feet away and 10 feet down and hit perfectly just under the pectoral fin. Three circles on the dart line and we tail roped her. Couldn’t have gone any smoother.”
This report came from Brooklyn’s Basil Pappas (Basil’s Topshots) and First Light Anglers www.firstlightanglers.com of Maine.
Local Fishing Is Excellent
The wind has been blowing for five days, but the fishing has been only affected in a small way. Boats fishing overnight and on day and a half trips have been piling up some of the season’s best scores. The fish are of varied size and species: albacore, bluefin, yellowfin, dorado and yellowtail.
Schools are being located under kelp paddies and on sonar machines and at the surface. Searcher owner-skipper Art Taylor told Bill Roecker August 8 that the forecast for August 9 was for the wind to come down to 10 knots, which should make for eminently fishable conditions. It appears that this is the peak of the season, but it could still get better.
