Rally On The Kite
“Our day at the island started off on the slow side,” wrote skipper Justin Fleck August 16, “with just a few yellows for the morning. Just before lunch things started to perk up when we were seeing signs of tuna crashing around. We had a nice rally on the kite where we boated a dozen or so reel quick. After that, we started to hook them steady on the fly lined sardines with 40 pound, but we just couldn’t land very many. Now frustrated, we decided to head east and try our hand at yellowtail tomorrow.”Intrepid Report 8-15

Thanks again for a great trip. We left again on our Amero 4 day charter so look for the reports…”
Polaris Supreme Report August 15
“The good sign on the big tuna is they are still here but just not biting real well. We scratched away at them today. We picked up 13 fish for the morning and 30 yellowtail to go with it. Hope they want to bite tomorrow. We will stay and fish until the evening. Weather is just great and everyone is having a good time.”
Qualifier 105 Report Coastside 5-Day (08/16/09)
“We finished up our trip fishing off shore today. The kelps were few and far between today. We scoured an area that had the right conditions, but few fish. We scratched away all day and ended up with a nice catch of Yellowfin tuna. The group overall has enough fish that most ended up with more than they had planned!
“Most of the gang came down from Norcal so they are planning how to pack up there fish to keep them cold, and planning a couple of cutting parties for back at home. Fellow coastsiders should contact someone they know from the trip to help out (and maybe score a fillet of two!)
“Thanks to our charter master Dale Myer for putting the group together and bringing some nice swag for all! Putting a group together is a lot of work and time on the phone, so thanks Dale! The next trip for Coastside is a 15-day in the spring and that trip is already full! We have a couple 1.5-day trips on line for this coming up week so if you would like to fish the big Q call the office for more information.”Red Rooster Report August 16”Just finishing off here and heading up the line. A little scratchy for yellows today but we still managed 130 fish. Stopping and going most of the day with a couple of nice drifts in the morning. Offshore tomorrow.”Royal Polaris Report August 14
“Weather today continued to be as beautiful as it gets here on the Baja coast. Flat seas sunshine and mild temperatures.”
“We arrived here at Benitos islands at 09:00 hours. We have had an absolutely wonderful day of fishing. We picked throughout the day at 18 to 22-pound Yellowtail. We also had some of the best fishing on beautiful reds that I have ever seen. We also spent several hours fishing Calico’s. That also was very good fishing. We kept a few and released many. It is now 19:30 hours and we are sitting on a White Sea Bass spot in front of the village with the red skies behind the island. It is an absolutely gorgeous evening. We will fish till about 21:30 hours tonight and then put it on a course for San Diego.”Royal Star Report August 15
“We finished up on the offshore grounds witnessing a significant weather change that arrived with a freshening morning breeze. By mid afternoon conditions were sloppy and a far cry from the glorious flat calm of the prior two days. The good news is that the fishing did not suffer and came on right out of the gates as opposed to our lackluster morning results yesterday. In fact, we woke up on fish not moving the boat for over an hour after daylight picking at a few bluefin and yellowfin tuna. It did not develop into a big hit but the morning drift action set the tone as we launched into a productive morning on yellowfin tuna, yellowtail, and dorado associating with kelps. The action was steady from regular stops that had everyone out at the rail the majority of the time through about noon. After noon the wind came on and only the heartier handful maintained the charge as we headed towards a different zone with promise of more bluefin and perhaps a few albacore to finish out our time on the grounds.” Searcher Report August 16
“Today we started in the area where there was excellent fishing for yellowfin tuna by several boats. Our day started with a few fish under the boat at daylight and we landed 3 bluefin tuna and 3 yellowfin tuna. We had a few jigstrikes in the morning in the same area. Unfortunately the tuna action slowed way down and we started looking for kelp paddies. We found several kelps but most of them had very little fish.
“It was a pretty slow afternoon with a few small yellowtail and dorado. Wow, things really changed from the day before! We landed 40 yellowtail, 30 yellowfin tuna, three bluefin tuna and seven dorado for our efforts. We are hoping tomorrow is a little more productive. The weather is great with very little wind and almost no swell.”
Shogun Report August 16
“Guadalupe Island didn’t produce for us today, the tuna were non cooperative. We managed to land a dozen yellowtail and then Norman pulled the plug and put the Shogun on course for Cedros. En route this afternoon we had a few stops on the kelps with tuna, dorado and yellowtail biting well. This evening its a smooth ride down swell and the weather is holding steady with fair seas. Arriving at Cedros just before first we’ll try for mackerel to supplement the sardines on board. The yellowtail action should be good, and Cedros always delivers a surprise or two.”Vagabond Report August 16
“Back from a nice 3-day. Awesome weather with some Albies on the kelp patties then onto Bluefin, Yellowfin, Yellowtail, Dorado, and Leighton Pagay, Jr., one of our junior anglers hooked and released a Marlin. What a thrill! Fun for all, especially the jackpot winners, Dan Felker, Victor Bermundez, and Gary Kim, all with Bluefin in the 40-lb range. Guadalupe fans, we still have some spots on the 5-day leaving August 22nd.”
