“Outstanding Weather,” Limits
Tom Rothery docked his Polaris Supreme August 18 after a five-day trip with 24 anglers that produced limits of yellowfin and yellowtail. Most were from offshore waters, though the bigger tuna caught on the Ron Heil charter came from Guadalupe Island.
Chartermaster Heil said the trips had “Outstanding weather,” and wanted to “…give credit to the crew,” for their assistance during the fishing.
Mike Hagan of La Mesa spent a half-hour reeling in the top fish, a 62.8-pound yellowfin that took his sardine on a 4/0 Mutu hook. He said he used 40-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 40-pound Big Game line on a TLD 20 reel and a Seeker five and half-foot rod.
John Hom won second place for a 59.6-pound tuna, and chartermaster Heil won third for a 59.6-pound yellowfin. Rob Bledsoe of Lakeside found a 35-pound dorado, and posed with it in the jackpot lineup.
Good Offshore Fishing
Spirit of Adventure returned to H&M Landing August 18 under Mike Keating’s hand after a five-day Big Ten charter with 23 passengers, including jigmaker Matt Salas. Retired skipper Joe Dunn was also aboard to fish. The trip fished offshore and at Guadalupe Island, where white sharks are beginning to extract a tax of hooked tuna.
Phil Kassel of San Bernadino was chartermaster. The trip picked up a wahoo on a black and purple Marauder at Guadalupe.
Les Wannamaker of Encinitas won first place for a 68-pound tuna. He bagged it with a sardine on a 2/0 ringed Super Mutu hook tied to 40-poundSeaguar fluorocarbon leader and 40-pound Ande line. He used a TLD 30 reel and a Sabre 655 H rod.
Dale Prichard of Redondo Beach won second place for a 65.9-pound tuna, and Gregg Dahle of Torrance took third place for a 60.6-pound yellowfin tuna.
Captain Potato Head’s Lucky Number
Art Taylor docked his Searcher at Fisherman’s Landing August 18 after a three-day trip with 27 fishermen aboard. It was Dick “Captain Potato Head” Uranga’s 13th annual charter. Searcher anglers took limits of offshore yellowfin.
Tommy Patton of Santa Maria won first place for his 32-pound bluefin tuna. He said it bit a sardine on a 3/0 hook tied to 25-pound Izorline on a Penn 500 reel and a Seeker 970 rod.
Searcher regular mark Seals won second place for a 31.8-pound bluefin that erred on his sardine. Chris Edmondson of Mission Viejo won third place for a 24.4-pound yellowfin tuna.
Eight-Footer, Long Soak
Bob Peterson chartermastered the West Coast Anglers five-day trip on Red Rooster III with skipper Andy Cates. He thanked FishingVideos.com, Avet and Five Star Fish Processing for their sponsorships of the trip, which docked at H&M Landing August 18.
Brian Crill won the jackpot for a 60-pound yellowfin tuna he got at Guadalupe Island.
“It was a 30-minute fight,” said Bob. “He bit after a long soak.”
Crill baited his ‘dine on a 3/0 Eagle Claw hook. He used 40-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader and 65-pound Izorline Spectra on an Accurate 665 reel and a Seeker eight-foot rod.
Rudy Morfin of Carson won second place for a 59-pounder, and Bob Boyce of San Diego got third place for a 57-pound yellowfin tuna.
