Net Update August 28, 2009Tuna Tracker Trip
Mark Pisano docked his Independence at Pt. Loma Sportfishing August 28 after the annual five-day Tuna Trackers charter with 23 anglers (ultra-limited load) and chartermaster Sheldon Siskin of Manhattan Beach.
Siskin took first place in the jackpot for his 80.8-pound yellowfin that bit on the double sardine rig under the kite. He used one of the boat’s kite outfits to land the fish.
“We were at Guadalupe for a day,” remarked skipper Pisano, and spent three days offshore. It was good fishing. The water offshore was about 69 degrees. We got fish on both sides of a little break. I did better on the warm side.”
Troy Cox of Simi Valley won second place for a 62.8-pound tuna, and Joe Davis of Huntington Beach won third place for a 56.2-pound Guadalupe Island yellowfin tuna.
Rose Finds Good Fishing
Roy Rose brought the Royal Polaris home to Fisherman’s Landing August 28 after a five-day trip with 25 anglers. He said his anglers mostly brought rental rods, but they fished long and hard and did very well.
Roy’s report for August 27 said, “First thing this morning we bumped into a school of mixed bluefin, yellowfin and albacore. We were able to drift on the school and pick at these quality tuna, up to 50 pounds, until lunch.
“We scratched away at some more albacore in the afternoon before it was time to wind in the lines and clean up the boat for next trip.”
At the trip’s end John Woods of Fresno won first place for a 61.8-pound yellowfin tuna. Jim Blankenship of Hanford was second for a 61.7-pounder, and Jason Puchin of Fresno won third place for a 61.2-pound Guadalupe Island yellowfin tuna.
Mitch Otera Charter
Royal Star arrived August 28 under Brian Sims’ hand, docking at Fisherman’s Landing with her 24 anglers following a six-day trip.
“We had great fishing everywhere we went,” commented Sims.
Maurice Williams of Las Vegas won the first spot in the trip’s jackpot for a 70-pound yellowfin he scored with a blue sardine Megabait jig on 30-pound Izorline. He said he fished with 50-pound Izorline Spectra, an Accurate 270 reel and a nine-foot Seeker Ulua rod.
Greg Van Hale of La Canada won second place for a 64.5-pound tuna. Ernie Holmes of Socorro, NM and Greg Poldy of Oak Hill, VA tied for third. Both anglers had a 64-pound yellowfin tuna.
Chartermaster Takes First Place
American Angler docked at Pt. Loma Sportfishing August 28 after the Chasin’ Tuna charter of five days with 19 anglers under skipper Ray Lopez.
Mike Goldsmith of Valley Center was chartermaster and the first-place winner for an 84-pound tuna he bagged with a sardine on a 3/0 Gorilla hook. The fight went 45 minutes.
Goldsmith chuckled as he remembered the long battle. “He was a stubborn thing. The sharks were on us, so I was lucky, and I got a good gaff from Jordan.”
Mike said he used 40-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader, 40-pound Maxima and 60-pound Line One Spectra on an Avet LX reel and a Seeker 6470 H Black Steel rod.
Mike Hill of San Marcos won second place for a 65.5-pound tuna, with third-place winner Mark Malone of Valley Center right behind him for a 65-pound yellowfin tuna. Bruce Marcotte of Oceanside won honorable mention for an 84-pound tuna.
