Excel Jackpot Winners
A five-day trip aboard the Excel with skipper Justin Fleck ended August 13 when Fleck docked at Fisherman’s Landing and let his 20 charter anglers off. Tom Thompson was chartermaster.
“We had another great morning of yellowtail fishing,” wrote Justin August 11, “but just like yesterday it fell apart midmorning. With plenty of school-sized yellows in the hatch, we spent the afternoon looking for trophies. Though we could see good fish around, they just wouldn’t bite. Tomorrow we will be offshore looking for tuna and dorado.”
At the scales, Brad Skoglund of Chandler, AZ proved to be the winner, for a 23.2-pound white seabass. He said he caught it with a Salas 6X Jr. jig in scrambled eggs color, tied to 40-pound Big Game line. He fished with a Penn 30 reel and a Seeker six and a half-foot rod.
Steve Gammer of Long Beach won second place for a 23-pound dorado, and Dave Woody of Long Beach won third for a 22.6-pound yellowtail.
Slammed His Mack

American Angler Jackpot Winners
Christine Guaylianone was chartermistress on the five-day Angler’s Choice charter aboard American Angler. Sam Patella docked the boat at Pt. Loma Sportfishing August 13 and weighed the catch made by his 25 anglers.
“He slammed that green mackerel the second it touched the water,” said jackpot winner Eric Newby of San Carlos. His 41.8-pound yellowtail slurped the bait pinned on a 2/0 Flyliner hook, tied to 30-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader and 30-pound Big Game line. He said he used an Accurate 870 two-speed reel and a Loomis seven-foot rod.
Regular angler Dennis Saylors won second place for a 37.4-pound yellow, and Izorline pro-staffer Eric Seko of La Palma took third place for a 34.4-pounder yellowtail.
Bodacious Biscuit Bites Big Bait

Phil Wade and his 76.2# White Seabass
The biggest white seabass to come in to Fisherman’s Landing in many years arrived August 13 aboard the Royal Star with skipper Tim Ekstrom. The 76.2-pound giant was caught by Phil Wade of Huntington Beach on a large, freshly-caught mackerel at Cedros Island on a five-day trip with 21 anglers.
“I have to report an incredible, once in a lifetime catch for long time Royal Star angler Phil Wade,” wrote Ekstrom in his daily report August 10. “Phil’s seventy three pound White Sea Bass, landed while the sole angler fishing on the anchor after dinner proved that it is always worth soaking a bait or two in the night time hours. Congratulations to Phil who earned his noteworthy catch through perseverance, dedication, and experience. Of course there was at least a little luck in the equation but full credit to Phil for his effort.”
After the Star was tied up the fish was weighed again on the certified scales aboard. This time it weighed 76.2 pounds.

“It was amazing,” said Ekstrom. “The water brown, it was 60 degrees, and Phil was the only guy fishing after dinner, about nine o’clock.”
Phil said he pinned the big mackerel on an 8/0 Mustad circle hook, with a 50-pound Seaguar leader and 50-pound Big Game line. He used a TLD 30 reel and a Calstar Grafighter six-foot rod.
“That bait was fresh,” said Phil, “and it got bit in three or four minutes. It took off, and I knew I needed more drag. I thought it was a big yellow at first. After about ten minutes it came to the boat.
“’This might be a jackpot fish,’ I said to Tim.”
“’Don’t get too far ahead of yourself,’ he said.”
“Then we could see it, and it was over three feet long,” continued Wade.
“’Maybe it is a jackpot,’ said Tim.”
Tom Walker of Huntington Beach won second place for a 38.2-pound yellowtail, and Joe Pawlak of Redondo Beach won third place for a 35.8-pound yellow.
