Out of curiosity, how many of you fish eaters have been tested for Mercury?

I had requested a Mercury level test from my doctor and just got the results...

Normal or "safe" levels are around 10ppm, mine is at 25ppm even with a diluted sample.

So I have to lay off the fish for 6+ weeks until they do another test.

Have any of you dealt with this?

No I haven't however I was told that the fish in the gulf tend to be higher in mercury content than on the west coast so I have never been too concerned about it. I should probably have this done, since I eat fish about 3 times per week. If you lay off for six weeks or so does that give them a better idea as to how much mercury you have in your system? Also, how do they get rid of it?

I don't think there's a way to rid mercury from the body. I can't recall where I saw something about it, but I'm pretty sure once it's in you system, the only thing one can do is control the intake from that point on.

I was tested in the late 60's when I was consuming fw fish 5 days a week on the English River in Canada. At that time, they really didn't know much about it - except that Minimata Disease had killed thousands in Japan. I tested about 34ppm and was told to layoff fish for a few months. Kinda hard to do when you're a fishing guide.

I don't each much fish anymore esp saltwater denizens and tilefish are the worst for mercury - so avoid them at all costs.

Hey Ko - There are some ways to help the body expel mercury from the system. Some are administered by a doctor and can be a bit harsh but there are some natural things such as cliantro, chlorella, Niacin & vitavin C.

I am going crazy not eating fish and I will see what happens when I get my next blood tests done next month.

I've eaten all that herbal stuff and nothing has changed. Mercury is heavy metal and resides in the fat layers (tho I don't have much left now) alongside the PCB's and other toxins like DDT. The only way I know of eliminating is liposuction, but like I said, I don't have much of a layer - so it would be rather expensive and pointless.
