 Post subject: 130# flurocarbon connection
PostPosted: Sat Dec 22, 2007 8:28 am
just returned from a 10 day. saw people using a short 3 foot piece of heavy flurocarbon tied to 135# mono directly using a surgeons knot rather than a long flurocarbon leader connected directly to 200# spectra for the added stretch that mono provides. they definitely hooked up more than with straight mono. My question is: What other knots can be used to tie a short flurocarbon leader (3 feet) to 135# mono that will hold up to the beasts that are on the lower banks?? :D

The best big tuna fisherman I know, Ben Kita crimps all connections. The 3 foot flurocarbon is crimped with chafing spring to a strong action ring and that is crimped and spring to main line. This may even free up the bait to work for you better that a tie to the line and is a stronger connection for a long fight. I did not use any leader knots myself.

Charkbait has the welded action rings. (online and the store on Bolsa Chica blvd. in Huntington Beach)

Scrool down, the 300# ring is about right.

Burns Outfitters also sell welded rings (black) I have seen them at Turner's. They have a yellow package

Yes, chafing spring and crimp on the hook. Now that I have tried the crimp that is the only way to go on 100# or higher. You do not need a ringed hook either. Buy Jinkai 1.2 mm stainless springs at 50 for $5.29 from Turner's for 130-150# and the 1.4 mm for 200#

ProFish has offered a few ring and grommets for me to try with this application that is not yet on the market. 2 grommets on one ring and is rated to 500#

Might try two line thimbles, that may work.

Bring a lighter with you to burn the tag end of the line after the crimp and spring is slid on the line to make a small ball. Pull the gear up to the small ball stop before crimping.
