Halibut fishing is kind of an art to a lot of people. For me I prefer using 20# line with a Calstar 700L. Halibut can sit there and mouth a bait from the tail so the use of a trap hook works.

The leader I use is usually 20# flourocarbon with a 3/0 main hook that I hook through the nose of the bait and then I snell a smaller treble hook that I hook into the tail of the bait.

Use a sliding sinker above the leader. You can also rig a lead head this way.

I like Davids idea with the exception of one thing. I learned this from an "expert" butt fisherman.

Instead of putting a sliding sinker above the leader (which is connected with a swivel) slide another swivel on your main line above the swivel taht connects your leader, so that it slides freely. Tie a small loop of line to the other end of that swivel so that you can easily connect a torpedo sinker (this allows you to change out your sinker without having to cut and retie. The swivel will allow the sinker to slide up the main line when the fish starts to slowly swim away. this has worked very well for us.
