Post subject: 2-speed or not 2-speed. that is the question...

Do I really need a 2 speed for the five day?

if so, then is either a tld 20 or tld30 big enough? seems like i can pick up a used one for a fair enough price.

cheers
jerry

I would always recommend a 2-speed even on a 5 day. If we end up fishing at the Lupe you have a shot at some good size Yellowfin and you will be thankful you have a 2-speed.

The best 2-speed I have found for that type of fishing is the Avet LX or JX 6/3. Small reels with great power.

I second David almost exactly. The JX is the perfect model for Lupe on tuna up to 50-60, plenty big for the 25-40's.

After my August 6 day, I'm converting just about everything to 2-speed.
If you're just doing the one trip, you can check with the boat and I know most of them have loaners, if you don't want to drop the loot.

Well you guys are saying what i was thinking might be the case: guadalupe = possible 50+ sized fish so 2 speed.

I do love my LX, so a JX or LX 6/3 might be the ticket. I was just not wanting to drop $400 on a reel that i may not need otherwise. I just checked the rental list from the rooster and they skip from 114h's to 50 s's.

I think I'll watch for a good deal on a used LX or JX, or something a little bigger so that after the trip if i don;t think I'll be needing it i can sell it and come out OK. I would think a used LX 6/3 would be easy to buy and resell within $30, which is cheaper than the rental tackle prices i have scared up.

Is the TLD 2-speed a contender? given that i can get one for much less.

thanks
jerry

Jerry, are you serious???

Isn't your user name "professor"? And you need to ask that question?

Go with the LX 6/3. I have caught tuna up to 100lbs on that real. Could have landed even bigger fish with it no problem. If you buy one and want to sell it later at a discounted price, then buy a blue one and send me an email when your done :D

PS:remember t-shooter that us professor's are only experts with things found on desert islands...

...and most desert islands have a shortage of Avets, especially blue ones

on the other hand if Mary Ann shows up I know just what to do, so don't worry

I just finished a 5 day to the lupe back in the beginning of the month and I would definitely go 2 speed. Most of the tuna we were catching were in the 30-40 pound range we did have some in the 50-60 pound also, and I'm sure there are bigger models around too.

On our trip we did have some guys with penn 500 jigmasters and 113, 114 senators. Granted they got the job done with the reels but guys with the 2 speed reels were getting their fish in almost twice as fast as the guys with the single speed reels.

Fishing the Lupe you definitely want to get your fish in as quick as possible as you have the taxman (great white shark) to contend with and if you go bit on the long soak you could have anywhere from 200-400yds of line out. JX/LX reels are great there.

If you look on the LR section - a 160 was bagged with a JX 2-speed.... :o
