hey guys,

took my new-to-me big boat, the Salmon Express, over to lake michigan this morning to look for coho salmon. we got there to find about 40 baots backed up at the ramp, turns out there was a tournament of some sort today.

we launched at about 7 am and discovered the boat would not run at idle. a little investigation and i found a linkage adjustment to the choke did the trick, 5 minute delay!

lines went in around 7:40 after a 30 minute ride to the end of the jettys where we found greasy calm conditions under a beautiful blue sky. then a 10 minute run south to our starting spot which we chose entirely at random.

fishing was very slow compared to earlier in the week when limits were being boated in a hour or so. most boats reporting on the radio that they had caught one or two. we finally scored a coho at 10:30, after a couple of knckdowns that came up empty. about 12:30 we moved north about 5 miles and found a pocket of warmer water. had a knockdown within a few minutes, and then five minutes later a fish hit hard on my side i handed the rod to Mike T who pulled on a real nice fish until it jumped and toosed the rapala right back at us. We were really disappointed to loose a true quality steehead!

a bit later Jimmy T hooked up a nice 5 pound coho which we iced after a short struggle. that was all she wrote for us today, trolled another hour and called it quits at 4:30.

So the skunk is out of my new boat and i'm having fresh salmon for dinner.

not bad for my (and my guests) first time ever fishing on lake michigan considering most of the tournament guys weighed in a ZERO toady. adn on top of that i did not have to mow any grass either, it don't get any better. now if i would have remembered the sumscreen...
